Christmas 2008

The last two months have been as hectic and interesting as usual, and commenced with principal Don Fleming being invited to present at the IPTME MSc students packaging module.  Don went on to speak about the role of polymer characterisation in flow simulation, specifically in the packaging industry.  Again, much focus was put on getting accurate data about which to simulate, what are now very complex flow regimes.  The first week of December saw Don travel to the Czech Republic for the annual Compuplast distributors meeting, and as ever, it was interesting to see the developments in the pipeline.  Perhaps the most intersting element in the last few months has been the increase in very real funding available to both SMEs and non SMEs by government.  FlemingPTC has a long history of working with central and local government agencies to provide specialist consultancy to the polymer industry, and the economic gloom has had a beneficial effect on the funding levels.  It had been a while since we had worked on such a project but it seems the government have come good on their promises.  A major project to support a polymer industry company was undertaken and it seems likely this funding will increase and extend into 2009.  FlemingPTC is working on three proposals for early 2009 all with the possibility of significant funding, so if you feel you have such a project and may be eligible, do not hesitate to contact us.

In the first week of December, Don Fleming travelled to the Czech republic for the annual Compuplast distributors meeting and as usual was impressed by the new devlopments.  The user experience is being further enhanced about the V6.0 platform, with V6.3 being the latest version.  Most modules have seen underlying development in some manner, but the overall look and feel of version 6 is now becoming stabilised, and will probably be used for the forseeable future.  This stabilisation is good as the feeling of intuitive navigation will not be impaired.  The President of Compuplast, Dr Jiri Vlcek will be touring the UK in March 2009, so if you feel you would like to meet one of the world's experts in extrusion flow simulation give us a call. Keep watching the newsletters, as this tour may well turn into an extrusion seminar!

November saw Don presenting at the IPTME, Loughborogh to students of their MSc course.  The presentation was titled Polymer Rheology and its application to flow simulation.  The presentation covered basic polymer rheology and rheometry, focusing on how accurate measurements of shear and extensional viscosity are vital for creating a representative characterisation of any polymer to be used in a flow simulation exercise.  The presentation then looked at several case studies where flow simulation had been successfully employed to predict and eliminate production problems in a virtual, rather than actual process trial.
Government funding for the polymer industry
Government funding for the polymer industry

Amidst the pessimistic talk of economic difficulty, the government has actullay done some of what it promised to by way of providing direct financial support for eligible companies and projects.  Don Fleming has over the years worked on many such projects, but with the necessity in this economic climate for government to be seen to provide very real help, funding has increased.  Don has recently been working with a SME company to provide consultancy services in order to increase the efficiency of an extrusion line, and that company received 50%  funding. The grant was easily justified as the line efficiency increase paid for the project.  If the funding agency can show that profitability is increased and that this can be correlated to jobs saved and secured, funding is usually approved.

Fleming PTC is now working on three other project proposals where an extrusion line efficiency increase will pay for part or all of the project-and on top of that grant assistance may be possible.  If you have susch a project, whether it be screw configuration, cooling and/or die optimisation, give us a call and we can investigate grant assistance.
